During my time filming a documentary in India, I had a two-week hiatus. I faced a choice between returning home to the US or staying put and embarking on an adventure.

An Enchanting Motorcycle Odyssey.

Embarking on a motorcycle trip from the bustling city of Mumbai to the historical capital of India, New Delhi, was a journey that transformed my life. The allure of the open road, the thrill of exploration, and the promise of discovering new landscapes and cultures filled me with excitement. Armed with a backpack, a passion for adventure, and my trusted motorcycle, I set off on a 1,400-kilometer expedition that would forever etch itself in my memory.

Preparation and Departure:

The planning for this epic adventure began months before the actual departure date. I purchased the motorcycle locally in Mumbai a month before I arrived. I meticulously prepared it, ensuring it was in top-notch condition for the long journey ahead. It was well used, so I had to do some maintenance, tire checks, and a thorough examination of the engine were carried out to ensure the utmost safety during the trip.

Equipped with a detailed map, a GPS device, and essentials such as camping gear, first-aid supplies, and spare parts, I bid farewell to my colleagues, eager to encounter the unknown wonders that lay ahead. I would see them again in two weeks in New Delhi.

Day 1: Mumbai to Pune

The sun kissed the horizon as I left the familiar streets of Mumbai behind, venturing onto the first stretch of my journey, the road to Pune. Cruising past picturesque landscapes of Western Ghats and the refreshing sight of lush greenery, the ride was serene and rejuvenating. I reached Pune by evening and found solace in the warmth of a local homestay, where I got acquainted with fellow travelers who had their own tales of adventure.

That night, I slept on the floor of a room that I shared with other people. I discovered that rats come in search of food at night when one jumped on my leg. It quickly scurried away, and moments later, an eight-foot-long cobra approached me. It paused, gazing into my eyes as if to say, you are too big to eat so I will spare you my bite. Then slithered over my legs to follow the rat. Needless to say, I was fully awake at that point, and I made the decision never to sleep on the floor again.

Day 2: Pune to Aurangabad

The road from Pune to Aurangabad was marked by the beauty of Maharashtra’s countryside, dotted with charming villages and vibrant markets. En route, I visited the majestic Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, standing as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage. The ancient rock-cut temples and monasteries left me awe-struck, reminding me of the nation’s deep-rooted history.

Day 3: Aurangabad to Indore

Leaving Maharashtra’s boundaries, I entered the neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh, where the landscape slowly changed, revealing the diverse beauty of India. The winding roads through dense forests, and the occasional encounter with wildlife, filled me with excitement. The welcoming people of Indore extended their hospitality, making my stay memorable.

Day 4: Indore to Ujjain and Bhopal

Rising early, I set out to explore Ujjain’s spiritual aura, visiting the revered Mahakaleshwar Temple and experiencing the profound rituals on the banks of the Shipra River. Continuing my journey, I reached the city of Bhopal, where the blend of modernity and tradition was evident. I explored the grand architecture of the Taj-ul-Masajid and the history preserved at the Bharat Bhavan.

Day 5: Bhopal to Agra

Crossing the borders of Madhya Pradesh, I entered the state of Uttar Pradesh. My next destination was the iconic city of Agra, home to one of the world’s most magnificent structures, the Taj Mahal. Witnessing the breathtaking beauty of this monument at sunrise was an experience beyond words. I also explored the Agra Fort, delving into the Mughal era’s grandeur.

Day 6: Agra to Jaipur

The journey from Agra to Jaipur was adorned with colorful Rajasthan landscapes, showcasing the state’s vibrant culture and heritage. I was enamored by the grandeur of the Jaipur’s Amer Fort, the elegant City Palace, and the artistic Hawa Mahal. I immersed myself in the lively bazaars, collecting souvenirs to preserve the memories of this incredible trip.

Day 7: Jaipur to New Delhi

As my motorcycle rumbled towards the final leg of my journey, I couldn’t help but reflect on the transformative experience I had undergone. I entered New Delhi, the capital city of India, with mixed emotions of joy and melancholy. The iconic India Gate, the historic Red Fort, and the bustling markets showcased the city’s multifaceted nature.

Final words:

My motorcycle trip from Mumbai to New Delhi remains etched in my heart as an exhilarating and soul-stirring adventure. It was not merely a journey of kilometers but a passage through time, cultures, and diverse landscapes. The people I met, the sights I witnessed, and the lessons I learned during this expedition have forever enriched my life. This incredible odyssey has fueled my passion for exploration and has left me yearning for more such experiences in the future.
